Yes. Steel targets are very safe when properly designed, thoroughly tested, and used at recommended distances. It’s important to note there are no government regulations for steel target design or testing. Some overseas manufacturers are selling products into the U.S. market without the ability to properly test them due to strict firearm regulations in their own countries. Because there is no oversight agency for steel target safety, it’s up to each customer to use their own good judgment when selecting a trusted manufacturer.
The lifespan of a steel target depends on several factors, including the caliber used, bullet energy, velocity, and total round count.
For example, we have targets at a nearby training facility that have taken more than 400,000 pistol rounds each with no signs of failure.
Static targets without moving parts typically last longer than reactive models. Likewise, targets used mainly with pistol calibers tend to outlast those that are regularly shot with rifles.

Yes. All of our steel targets are built for year-round outdoor use in any weather. To keep them looking their best, we recommend occasionally touching up the paint. Functionally, however, they will continue to perform reliably for many years, even with constant outdoor exposure.
Yes. In most cases, our targets are designed so that wear components are inexpensive and easy to replace. Simply email us with your model number. We’ll send you a parts list, help you identify the components you need, and provide instructions so you can order the parts directly from our website.
AR550 is slightly harder than AR500 steel but can be brittle and susceptible to cracking. While most target designs will not benefit from using AR550 steel, the harder material can reduce pitting and is preferred in limited applications. Challenge Targets utilizes both types of material in our designs and we weigh the benefits of each during the product design stage.
